Craig Stanton Back in Grand-Am Cup Victory Lane

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., June 19, 2004 � Grand-Am Cup points' leader Craig Stanton, of Long Beach, Calif., added to his win total today at Watkins Glen (NY) International. Driving the No. 44 TheRaceSite.com Porsche 996 with David Murry, Cumming, Ga., in The Glen 250, three-hour race, Stanton started 47th overall, 23rd in class, and began a charge to the front of the grid. Stanton worked his way into the lead before turning driving chores over to Murry who then had to battle his way back to the point twice in a race highlighted by a bevy of caution periods. The Nonnamaker family-owned Porsche made its final jump into the lead four laps from the end. Today's victory adds a fourth win in five races for Stanton. It also stretches his lead in the driver championship standings to 32 points over Terry Borcheller. There are five races remaining in the 2004 Grand-Am Cup season with the next round at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 8th. Today's race will be broadcast on SPEED at noon on June 27th.Craig Stanton,(about the race): “Man, what a wild race. I've never seen so many cautions. I think the pace car was about to run out of gas! The Nissan was strong and the Caddy was coming all race long but we were able to hang in there. We had a really good handling package but not much in the motor department. Our strengths were definitely handling, brakes and green flag laps. The restarts were really tough and after our driver change I don't think we ran more than six or seven laps under the green. David did a great job. Our plan was to just keeping passing as many people as we could on the restarts, which was hard because we didn't have the power. But, David came from the back to the front twice, I think, and I did once. The Nonnamakers gave us a great car again and I am just so excited we could get them their fourth victory of the season. After today, the races are only going to get more exciting all the way through the end of the season so I am looking forward to this!”(about the point battle): “This stretches our point lead out some which is really good. But, this isn't anywhere near over. It's going to make quite a battle to the end.
