Indianapolis Legend Tom Carnegie Remembered by Jimmy Kite
INDIANAPOLIS, February 15, 2011 – The February 11 loss of legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway Public Address Announcer Tom Carnegie has left a void in the motorsport world that will not soon be filled. The impact of the 91-year old’s death on those directly tied to the world’s most famous racetrack was immediate and lasting. As a youngster, Jimmy Kite, who lives in Indianapolis, sat in the stands during May and listened to Carnegie’s baritone voice over the world’s largest PA system, dreaming one day he would hear his own name. During his 61-year career, Carnegie interviewed countless drivers who were living their lifelong dream of racing at the famed 2.5-mile oval; Kite’s first opportunity came in 1998.
This 2000 photo of Jimmy Kite recalls one of those Kite's favorite memories.
