Bryan Sellers Takes His Best Opportunity As His Favorite Corner at COTA

American Ace Instructs You Through the TUDOR Championship’s Best Corners

AUSTIN, Texas, September 15, 2014 – The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is the most recently built track on the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship tour. At 3.4-miles, the Austin, Texas venue boasts dramatic signature turns that make the three year-old facility a favorite for fans and drivers. With 20-turns, it would seem hard for Braselton, Georgia’s Bryan Sellers to pick his favorite. However, it is Turn 12 – a corner Sellers calls “Opportunity” – that stands out to the driver of the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR. Saturday, September 20, Sellers and teammate Wolf Henzler (Germany) have their opportunity to show why “T12” is where the Lone Star Le Mans can be won or lost.

Drive Through Circuit of the America’s Turn-12 with Bryan Sellers: “My favorite corner at COTA is probably not a popular choice. There is nothing that most would call ‘special’ about this particular turn. It’s not high-speed. It doesn’t have elevation change. Really it doesn’t have any of the things that make so many of the turns at COTA stand out. What it does have is opportunity. I’ll take opportunity over dramatic any day.

To me, Turn 12 is one of the best corners at COTA. It is a high-speed approach to a very slow-speed second gear, left-hand corner. One of my favorite things as a driver is a heavy and hard brake zone. It is a constant challenge to try and force yourself to brake later and later every lap.

I mentioned earlier that this corner isn’t ‘special’ but it does provide opportunity. What I mean by this is the opportunity to pass. This is the best passing corner on the track. Twelve is the corner that brings action to COTA. We begin braking for this corner from a top speed of 160 miles per hour and slow to somewhere in the area of low 50 mph and drop from sixth gear to second. That gives you a great opportunity to set up a pass. The straight from Turn 11 to Turn 12 is the longest on the track. That gives you a long time to use the draft from the car in front of you and to plan your attack. It is a very classic corner for an out-braking maneuver where you try to get next to the other car and charge into the brake zone playing chicken. You run deeper and deeper, side-by-side, waiting to see who is going to be the last one to get to the brakes. The one that wins that challenge is taking the corner and likely the lap. If you do it on the last lap, you have a great chance of taking the Lone Star Le Mans win. The Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR is great under braking and acceleration, two vital things in Twelve. That, and our podium at Virginia, gives us added confidence entering this race weekend in Austin.”

The Lone Star Le Mans can be seen live on FOX Sports 2 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, September 20. The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will also carry the race live on its network of stations.
