Austin Weather Cancels Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by Cayman Islands Qualifying

Austin, Texas. Severe weather in the Austin, Texas-area has forced the cancelation of qualifying for Rounds 3 and 4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands. As a result, per Sporting Regulations 40.4, the starting grid for Race 1 – scheduled for an 8:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time green flag on May 2 – will be set by the Drivers’ Championship Point standings. By virtue his two pole positions and one race win at the opening weekend of competition at Sebring in March, Pro class points leader Seb Priaulx (United Kingdom) will bring the 26 car field to the start of the first 45-minute race. Beside his No. 15 Kelly-Moss Road & Race Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car will be teammate Kay van Berlo (Netherlands) in the No. 3 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car.

All Pro and Pro-Am class drivers start based on combined points with Pro-Am 991 class cars lining-up behind. Those drivers who have scored no points, will be gridded at the back of their respective groups (Pro/Pro-Am and Pro-Am 991). The five points awarded to a pole position winning driver will not be awarded for Race 1.

The starting field for Race 2 – scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m. CDT on Sunday, May 2 – will be based on the fastest race lap achieved by each driver in Race 1.

Brian Blocker, Series Manager, Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands.
“We are disappointed that weather has forced the cancelation of qualifying for our COTA rounds. However, the safety of the corner workers and drivers is our primary focus. It is unfortunate that this will put an extra burden on some of the drivers that didn’t achieve their expected result at Sebring but it should make for a pair of very exciting races. The forecast is excellent for tomorrow and we are looking forward to debuting our partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism here in Austin. With the early-morning green flag, our drivers won’t have to wait long to get back behind the wheel.”
